From Passion to Profession: The Story Behind Occult Exotics

Growing up, I was captivated by the wonders of nature, spending countless hours watching David Attenborough documentaries and dreaming of one day keeping exotic pets of my own. However, I knew that such a responsibility required more than just fascination—I wanted the space, knowledge, and understanding to care for these incredible creatures properly.

It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that I finally had the time to dive headfirst into this passion. During those quiet months, I immersed myself in learning everything I could about exotic invertebrates, particularly jumping spiders and tarantulas. I watched YouTubers, read research papers, joined online groups, and devoured books on exotic pet care. It was an exciting and eye-opening journey that laid the foundation for what would eventually become Occult Exotics.

The Beginning of My Journey

In January 2021, I brought home my very first exotic pets: two Phidippus regius (Florida regal jumping spiders) and two tarantulas—a Brachypelma albiceps and a Caribena versicolor. From that moment, my fascination grew into a full-blown obsession.

Joining Facebook groups for exotic pet keepers was a turning point. Not only did I learn more about proper setups and reputable sellers, but I also made lasting friendships with fellow enthusiasts. Three people in particular—Paris at MM Invertebrates, Charlotte at Charlotte’s Webs, and Sophie at Phidporium—became incredible sources of support and inspiration. With their encouragement, I decided to take a leap and start breeding and selling exotic invertebrates myself.

The Birth of Occult Exotics

My journey as a breeder began with a small business I called Spider Shack. While it was a great start, I quickly realized I wanted a brand that felt more aligned with my personality and long-term vision. After brainstorming with my friends, I rebranded to Occult Exotics, and in March 2024, I officially launched under the new name.

Since then, Occult Exotics has grown into a thriving community of exotic pet enthusiasts. With amazing support on Facebook, a growing YouTube channel, and a continually improving website, I’m proud to see my passion turn into something that connects with so many others.

A Commitment to Quality and Care

At Occult Exotics, I’m dedicated to providing healthy, ethically bred invertebrates. Every breeding stock addition comes from reputable breeders to ensure there’s no inbreeding, and I carefully monitor each animal’s setup to ensure they’re happy and thriving.

Daily care includes feeding, maintaining proper lighting and temperature, and enriching their environments. I also make it a point to connect with my customers, offering advice, support, and recommendations—even if it means directing them to other businesses for something I don’t have in stock.

Currently, Occult Exotics offers Phidippus regius Florida, Phidippus regius Bahamas, and Gandanameno velvet spiders, with exciting plans to expand to Dolichothele diamantinensis dwarf tarantulas and Heterometrus Silenus scorpions. Of course, we’re also working on future pairings for our beloved jumping spiders and hopefully much more!

We also stock some amazing enclosure décor created by MM Invertebrates.

Why I Love What I Do

Exotic animals are endlessly fascinating, each with their own quirks, behaviours, and charm. Watching a jumping spider leap across its enclosure or observing a velvet spider weaving its intricate web is pure joy.

For me, this isn’t just a business—it’s a lifelong passion. There’s always something new to learn, and I genuinely believe there’s an exotic pet out there for everyone.
